How are you?
Did you indulge (or perhaps OVER-indulge a little) on a nice big-fat dinner last night? Or perhaps you’ve been indulging on more than just one nice big-fat dinner (or maybe partying too hard?) this past weekend (or over the course of the whole week)? Well, I have to honestly admit that I did overindulge some this Sunday: it was the Mother’s Day Dinner after all!
…And so, no matter how exactly you’ve been consuming those extra calories, you now see that the number on the scale jumped up way higher than you’d like it to be. And if you are like me, you are now feeling all guilty about those few extra drinks (that were not water) or desserts (that weren’t fresh fruit), or slices of pizza that you’ve feasted on. Are you scolding yourself for it and swearing that you won’t ever do this again? Well… I very much relate to that feeling.
But DON’T SCOLD YOURSELF! DON’T FEEL BAD! Because feeling bad hurts our emotional as well as overall health. And guess what? That tension damages your beauty as well as it affects your overall productivity and well-being. HEALTHY makes beautiful, remember? But what if you can’t shake that torturous feeling? What if, not matter how educated, smart and informed you are, you still feel bad for merely being a human being who gets off track sometimes?
But I am not writing this post to just tell you how wrong it is to scold yourself for anything you’ve done. I still want to mention, though, that what’s done is done and getting some extra lines and wrinkles on your face from worrying may be actually worse than having gained those few pounds…
I am writing this post because I believe that you CAN have the best of both worlds and that the only reason we feel bad when we get off track is because we feel POWERLESS. But just like with many other things in life I’ve come to realize that this feeling of powerlessness and guilt CAN be defied. How? By finding the right TOOLS to fix the situation. And then, not only you’ll be able to get back on track painlessly; you will feel empowered from knowing that no matter what happens – you know how to fix it.
OK, enough soul-searching. In this particular post I want to share the “tool” that I use when I know that I’ve slipped off and need to get back on track. Not only this “tool” helps me flush the excess pounds off my body. I will be indulging while doing so!
Yes, you’ve read it correctly. INDULGING. Because indulgence doesn’t always mean buttercream, does it?
And so, here is my fix that I hope will help you feel less guilty, more empowered and definitely less stressed because if you’ll indulge on this breakfast for a morning or two, you’ll feel much lighter and much livelier pretty soon. (At least this is what happens to me. And I also think that this is a much better approach than skipping the precious first meal of the day, or, even worse, fasting, which will only slow down your metabolism making it harder for your body to rid itself off the “junk” that you’ve consumed a bit too much of…)
Oh, and one more thing: I ALWAYS make sure to eat lots of fruit for breakfast. Any fruit, except, perhaps for the starchy bananas is very low in calories, but rich in nutrients and fiber. And you NEED that fiber to jumpstart your metabolism. I especially recommend starting a day like this with some watermelon or an apple: they are my favorites when I need to cleanse my body.
So, here is the recipe, if you can call it that 🙂 or, rather my remedy for THOSE days when the number on that bathroom scale is suddenly higher than you’d like it to be.
- Very-very low-calorie
- Still nutritious
- High in protein (naturally)
Healthy, Very Low-Calorie, All-Natural Breakfast Mousse
- 2 egg whites*
- 2-3 tsp sugar or erythritol*
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pinch cream of tartar
- 2-3 tsp cocoa powder
- In a big bowl whip the egg whites with the cream of tartar until soft peeks form. Add in the erythritol or sugar and whip on high speed until the mixture is really thick and glossy. Add the vanilla extract and the cocoa powder and whip until incorporated.
Recipe Notes*I use pasteurized egg whites*The cocoa powder is for the chocoholics like me (I don't count them, I don't mind having as much pure antioxidants as my heart desires), but sometimes I can also sprinkle the mousse with a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon if I am in the mood for it.*Erythritol is a zero-calorie sweetener that's completely natural. When I add it to my mousse instead of sugar, I get the all-protein, indulgent, eat-all-you-want white cloudy dessert for breakfast with just a 30 calorie "price tag". But even if you decide not to experiment with the sweeteners or you just don't have erythritol (or you can also use xylitol) on hand, even when you go with the 2 tsp of sugar, they won't add that many calories to this dessert for you to worry about. And yes, I know that a regular merengue requires much more sweetener than that. But all that sugar is added there as a stabilizer for when you bake it. And I promise that just the 2 tsp. make the whipped whites taste sweet enough to totally "indulge"!
P.S. Eat as much of this Healthy Mousse as you want! Those two egg whites make a HUGE cloud of a mousse .(Sometimes I eat so much of it that my belly feels REALLY full, but yet I know that in just an hour or two max I’ll feel all light and energized and ready for my afternoon snack!) Heaven!!!!!
